Yang Lu (Lu Schaper) was born in Shanghai, China. She grew up in an artistic environment, her father running the first art gallery of Shanghai in the eighties. As a teenager, she was selected to study art at the Shanghai Childrens' Palace. She had her subsequent art education at the Fine Art universities of Shanghai, majoring in Western painting, and Beijing, specializing in Chinese ink. She has lived and worked as a freelance artist in Malaysia, Singapore, France, and the Netherlands. Since 2012 she owns an art gallery (Galerie LuS) situated in the centre of the medieval Hanseatic city of Kampen in the Netherlands, to display her work on a continuous basis. On rare occasions, she organizes exhibitions of other artists in her gallery, for instance works by the famous Shanghai photographer Deke Erh.
Lu’s art includes oil paintings, Chinese ink drawings, photography, digital art and mixed media creations. Her style is a very personal blend of Oriental and Occidental themes and techniques, with a gradual shift over time from impressionism to expressionism, as she became exposed to the original expressionist masters in many European museums. Her later works combine themes from old Shanghai (especially girls in qipao dresses) in an expressionist style: “Shanghai Expressionism”. Her art has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, in Shanghai, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. She was the invited artist for an exhibition in Rouen-Bonsecours in 2003, and was selected as one of the invited artists for the 60-70-80 Contemporary Chinese Art exhibition in Tours, France. In 2019, one of her photographs won a Golden Award in the prestigious yearly Lang Jingshan Photography Competition.
Lu has been interviewed on radio/television in Singapore and the Netherlands. Several interviews with her have been published in regional or national newspapers in Singapore, France and the Netherlands. A Dutch glossy magazine dedicated six pages to her and her work.
Since 2010 her art designs have been used by the famous Shanghai High End Fashion chain Shanghai Story for a successful line of silk and pashmina scarves, including a special series for the Shanghai World Expo 2010. A number of bestsellers have been published in China that use her art as illustration. The German rock band Dorian Opera have used one of her paintings as the basis of the cover of their first CD.

From Shanghai ART Gallery to gallery LuS 从上海画廊到海上画廊
This is a picture from 1980 of the Shanghai gallery where my father was the manager, and where I grew up. I met many artists there. This gallery was in the most important shopping street of the French part of Shanghai.
Critics in Shanghai have said that I represent the renewal of the original Shanghai art movement "Haishang " 海上画派 of the previous century, a mixture of Eastern and Western styles representing the colonization of Shanghai in the early 20th century. The Chinese name of my gallery was also created by a prominent artist Liu Hai Su 刘海粟 of this movement in Chinese calligraphy for my father's gallery in Shanghai in the 80's. This is the first art gallery in Shanghai after the Cultural Revolution. The gallery is located in the most famous shopping street Avenue Joffre (霞飞路) inside the French concession.
